Bike Brakes Are No Match for the Power of a Lathe

Nov 18, 2023Nov 18, 2023

These discs are toast.

The lathe is one of the most powerful and dangerous tools in a workshop. These machines designed to rotate wood or metal at extremely high speeds and not bog down when you apply a turning tool to shape the material. They can stand up to just about anything, including bike brakes.

This clip comes from a new YouTube channel called Beyond the Press, launched by the guys behind those great hydraulic press videos. Watch as the lathe reaches maximum speed and the heat generated from the brake turns the disc red and eventually erupts into flame.

This test is amazing to watch—and a reminder that lathes are not to be messed with.
