Central NY bus monitor critically injured when school bus, pickup crash, police say

New Haven, N.Y. — A school bus monitor is in critical condition Wednesday after a bus collided with a pickup truck at a rural intersection in Oswego County, troopers said.

The Mexico Academy Central School District bus and pickup crashed around 6:39 a.m. at the intersection of County Route 1 and County Route 6 in town of New Haven, said Trooper Jack Keller, a state police spokesman.

The bus driver, Mark T. Vosseller, 69, of Fulton, was driving north on Route 6 when he failed to stop at a stop sign and drove into the path of a 2022 Dodge pickup, Keller said.

Theresa A. Steele, 63, a bus monitor, was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse with severe head injuries, Keller said. Vosseller was taken to Upstate with non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

The driver of the pickup, Jonathan H. Duval, 45, of Mexico, New York, was treated at Upstate and has been released, Keller said.

Vosseller was ticketed for failing to stop at a stop sign, Keller said. No students were on board, he said.
